What are Birthstones?

According to many traditions there is a connection between certain gemstones and your birth month or your zodiac sign. My birthstone is diamond (April) and I do love diamonds, but don’t we all? All three gemstones belonging to my zodiac sign Aries are red and that is seriously my favourite colour. Coincidence or is there more to it, what do you think?
