There is something in the air…
Love is in the air! Valentine, a celebration of love and romance. Are you waiting anxiously, with butterflies in your stomach, if you will get a card from that special someone you secretly really like? Or will you pluck up courage?
The origin of Valentine’s day
In the 4th century Saint Valentine married young couples in secret, even though it was forbidden by Emperor Claudius. Valentine was captured and executed around the fourteenth of February.
Pope Galasius pronounced the fourteenth of February the name day of holy Valentine in the year 496. In that same year the pope had forbidden a Roman fertility fest Lupercalia, which was always celebrated on the 15th of February, so Valentine became a substitute for that. This means that already for thousands of years there is love in the air around this time.
The celebration as we know it with anonymous cards, flowers and presents is a sort of melting pot of German, Roman and Christian rituals. The oldest known Valentine card dates from the year 1400 and can be seen in the British Museum.
What kind of jewellery is suitable to give on Valentine’s day?
A heart, the symbol of love, can be found in the Oogst collection in different variations. Pearls and gemstones like rose quartz are also linked to this day. But maybe you have a symbol or shape that’s special to you like a specific leaf or a word that we can use in a bespoke design to surprise your Valentine.
