What is the difference between a diamond and a brilliant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps the most frequently asked FAQ about diamonds. What’s the difference between a brilliant cut and a diamond? We’re going to explain it to you!

A diamond is a gemstone, the hardest material on earth. The brilliant cut refers to a specific cut. For example a sapphire can also be brilliant-cut, and a diamond is also cut in other shapes, such as the princess cut or rose cut.

A brilliant cut is a round shape with 56 facets. The light entering the stone is optimally reflected by the many facets and the angle at which they are cut. Proportions, refinements, and quality of the cut are crucial in this process. The crown height, the crown angle, the pavilion depth, the table reflection, the ratio of the rondel to the depth of the stone, the regularity of the rondel, the symmetry differences between the crown and the pavilion, and other details directly affect the sparkle of the gemstone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the four C\u2019s?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Colour<\/strong> stands for the tone, clarity<\/strong> is the stone\u2019s purity, carat<\/strong> is the weight of the diamond and cut<\/strong> it\u2019s shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

clarity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A diamond’s clarity spans a spectrum, from flawless to abundantly visible inclusions (black carbon particles) or even completely opaque (called a natural fancy or rustic diamond). If you choose a beautiful clarity, your diamond will live and sparkle, whether it’s small or large, round or square. Many inclusions, also known as “salt and pepper,” can also create a playful effect and add a unique touch to a design. The purer the diamond, the rarer and more valuable it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cut  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most beautiful is a perfectly cut diamond, it means that all its proportions are optimal. The shape we use the most is a brilliant shape. Next to the classical round brilliant we also use princess cut (a square shape), oval cut and pear shaped diamonds in our collection. \nSomething a little different is a rose cut diamond, quite magnificent with a vintage feel. This antique cut has a flat bottom and bigger facets at the rounded top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

colour<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly colour is a matter of taste. A perfectly white diamond will sparkle at you, you will keep staring at it! At Oogst we also love light brown or light yellow diamonds in a rose or yellow gold ring. The warm tones will blend really nicely with these gold colours and give an edge to it, something special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly something to consider is that colour also has an influence on the price of a diamond. The more white the diamond is, the more expensive it will be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirdly there is a difference between natural colours and treated colours in diamonds. Did you know there are also really bright colours like hot pink or ocean blue? These are called fancy colours, for they are treated (with high pressure and high temperature) to become this tone, so these are not natural tones, but really fun. Actually we love all colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

carat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carat is the weight of a diamond. One carat weighs 0.2 grams and consists of 100 “points.” The carat originates from a standard weight used in antiquity: that of a carob seed, which always weighs 0.2 grams. It is more rare to find a big rock with the perfect colour and clarity than a small stone. The heavier the diamond, the more valuable it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes a diamond so special<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Diamonds have many characteristics that make them so loved. There is the magical beauty and it\u2019s rarity, but the stone also has psychical properties that are very special. For example its high refractive index affects the way the light bends, scatters and reflects within the stone. This is why the diamond has a remarkable brilliance, unlike anything else.
